Basic Strategy Explained

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal way to play every blackjack hand against the dealer's upcard. It reduces the house edge to around 0.5% at 3:2 tables when followed perfectly.

  • Make the correct choice across hit, stand, double, split, and surrender.
  • Different rules and payouts change the edge; 6:5 blackjack is far worse than 3:2.
  • Learn hard totals, soft totals, and pairs in clear, colour-coded chunks.

Core Decision Areas

Hard Totals
Hands that can only be played at their face value. If you draw too high, you’re immediately at risk of busting. Because of this rigidity, Basic Strategy favours standing once you reach a strong number and doubling only when the math is clearly in your favour.
Soft Totals
Hands that still have “give” because an Ace can be valued as 1 or 11. This built-in safety net makes the hand more flexible, letting you press small edges with doubles. Basic Strategy avoids standing too early here, since the flexibility allows you to improve without the same bust risk.
Pairs
Two cards of the same rank. Splitting lets you turn one starting hand into two, often improving your chances when the dealer is in a weak position. Basic Strategy uses splitting to escape from disadvantageous totals and to create more opportunities from strong ones, while avoiding splits that usually leave you worse off.
Surrender
Use when allowed in a few high-edge dealer spots to cut losses.
